Glycol cooling has proven itself in Kenya’s dairy, beverage, and food processing industries, where batch cooling loads demand stable temperatures below what plain chilled water can deliver. A well-designed glycol plant serves multiple vessels from one central system with precise control at each point of use. Refitec Kenya brings process refrigeration experience to every glycol project, and takes particular care with concentration management, pump selection, and insulation, the three details that determine whether a glycol system runs trouble-free or freezes solid.

Glycol Cooling System Design by Refitec Kenya

A glycol cooling system uses a mixture of water and propylene or ethylene glycol, chilled by a refrigeration plant and circulated through pipes to cool tanks, vessels, molds, and heat exchangers. Glycol is used instead of plain water whenever the system must operate below the freezing point of water or must resist freezing during idle periods. Refitec Kenya designs complete glycol cooling systems for dairies, breweries, juice processors, bakeries, wineries, chemical plants, and plastics manufacturers in Nairobi and countrywide.

Why Glycol Systems Need Careful Design

The design of a glycol system is more demanding than a plain chilled water system. Glycol is more viscous than water, especially at low temperatures, so pumps and pipes must be sized for the higher pressure drop. The glycol concentration must be matched to the required freeze protection: a solution too dilute will freeze and burst pipes, while a solution too concentrated wastes pumping energy and reduces heat transfer. Common food-grade systems use propylene glycol at concentrations between twenty-five and forty percent depending on the operating temperature.

Our Design Process

  1. Load analysis. We identify every cooling consumer, its duty, temperature, and duty cycle, including batch cooling peaks in dairies and breweries.
  2. Glycol selection. We select the glycol type and concentration for the required temperature and freeze protection, preferring food-grade propylene glycol for food plants.
  3. Plant sizing. We size the chiller or condensing units, buffer tank, circulating pumps, and expansion vessel.
  4. Distribution design. We design the pipe network with balanced flows to every consumer, correct insulation to prevent condensation and losses, and control valves at each point of use.
  5. Controls. We specify temperature controls, pump sequencing, alarms, and monitoring so the system operates safely and efficiently.

Applications

Dairy plants chilling milk through plate heat exchangers and storage tanks; breweries and beverage producers cooling fermentation vessels and bright beer tanks; juice and water bottlers; meat plants cooling brine tanks and processing areas; and industrial processes such as mould cooling and chemical reactors.

Installation and Support

Refitec Kenya not only designs glycol systems but installs and commissions them with our own piping and refrigeration crews, pressure-tests every circuit, and provides operator training. We also service existing glycol systems, correcting under-concentration, leaking joints, failed pumps, and iced evaporators.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between propylene and ethylene glycol? Propylene glycol is food-grade and non-toxic, the standard choice for food and beverage plants; ethylene glycol is more efficient thermally but toxic, restricted to industrial processes with no food contact. How often should glycol concentration be checked? We test concentration at every maintenance visit, since dilution by top-up water or gradual contamination can silently erode freeze protection. Can one glycol plant serve several tanks? Yes. We design ring-main distribution systems with balanced branches so one central plant cools multiple vessels at their individual temperatures.

We design and install glycol systems for dairies, breweries, and processors in Nairobi, Thika, Nakuru, Eldoret, Mombasa, and across Kenya, with commissioning and operator training included.
