New Washing Machine Installation Procedure
By Refitec.co.ke
Installing a new washing machine might seem daunting, but with the right approach and careful attention to detail, it can be a straightforward process. At Refitec.co.ke, we’ve installed hundreds of washing machines across Nairobi and Kenya, and we’re sharing our professional installation procedure to help ensure your appliance operates safely and efficiently from day one.
Pre-Installation Preparation
Before you begin, verify that your installation site meets the necessary requirements. Check that you have access to a cold water supply, a drainage point, and an electrical outlet rated appropriately for your washing machine. Most modern machines require a standard 220-240V outlet. Measure the installation space carefully, ensuring there’s adequate clearance for door opening and ventilation. Keep your washing machine’s user manual handy throughout the process, as specifications can vary between models.
Unpacking and Initial Inspection
Start by carefully unpacking your washing machine in a clear area near the installation site. Remove all packaging materials, including foam blocks, cardboard inserts, and protective film. Crucially, locate and remove the transit bolts or shipping bolts from the back of the machine. These bolts secure the drum during transportation, and leaving them in place will cause severe vibration and potential damage during operation. Store these bolts safely, as you’ll need them if you ever move the machine.
Inspect the machine for any visible damage that may have occurred during shipping. Check the drum by rotating it manually to ensure it moves freely. Examine all hoses and connections for cracks or defects before proceeding with installation.
Water Supply Connection
Position your washing machine in its designated location, leaving enough space to access the rear connections. Attach the inlet hose to the cold water supply valve, ensuring the rubber washer is properly seated inside the connector to prevent leaks. Hand-tighten the connection first, then use pliers to give it an additional quarter turn. Avoid over-tightening, as this can damage the threads or washers.
Open the water supply valve slowly and check for leaks around the connection. If you notice any dripping, turn off the water, disconnect the hose, check the washer, and reconnect properly. For machines with hot water connections, repeat this process with the hot water inlet hose.
Drainage Setup
Connect the drainage hose to your standpipe or drainage point. The hose should be secured at a height between 60 and 90 centimeters above the floor level, as specified in your manual. This height prevents siphoning and ensures proper drainage. If using a standpipe, ensure the hose doesn’t go too deep, as this can cause drainage problems. Secure the hose with the provided clips or ties to prevent it from dislodging during the spin cycle.
Electrical Connection and Leveling
Plug the washing machine into a grounded electrical outlet. Never use an extension cord or adapter, as these can pose fire hazards and may not handle the machine’s power requirements safely. Check your circuit breaker to ensure it’s rated appropriately for the appliance.
Leveling is critical for proper operation and longevity. Use a spirit level placed on top of the machine to check both front-to-back and side-to-side alignment. Adjust the leveling feet by turning them clockwise to raise or counterclockwise to lower each corner. Once level, tighten the lock nuts against the machine base to secure the feet in position. A properly leveled machine minimizes vibration and noise during operation.
Final Testing
Run a test cycle without laundry to verify all connections. Watch for leaks, unusual noises, or excessive vibration. Check that water fills properly, drains completely, and that the machine completes its cycle successfully. If everything operates smoothly, your installation is complete.
